Creative works by Christopher Boots are the intermediaries between ourselves and our environment. Light, space, material and void, understood and used together in harmony, can create a visual symphony ideal for living. The tactile and visceral qualities of furniture and lighting both inform us when we enter a space and also set up an often unspoken narrative that can be read as a map of a journey that lifts our spirits, help us relax and enjoy the world we spend our waking life in.

Christopher Boots designs custom lighting and furniture that follows these themes. Leaning towards the beautiful and unexpected, with a broader view to aging gracefully, these concepts inform the material outcome that adds a sense of magic to everyday life. Products are therefore primarily process based, with many of the resulting works showing evidence of construction and revealing what otherwise would be hidden. This beauty is known as wabi-sabi in Japanese. It is the beauty of things modest and humble, the beauty of things unconventional. Material characteristics include:

a suggestion of natural process

irregular

unpretentious

intimate

earthy

simple

Techniques utilised range from handwoven and stitched to machined and lasercut- a cross breed of traditional artisan methods and computers. Pure materials sourced from local suppliers are chosen for their environmental considerations, and also to support the local community. Reclaimed materials are also chosen when possible for their innate style and beauty- who wants to have the same mass-produced item when you can choose a handmade item with a history that is unique?

The immaterial characteristics of the following items come to life when they are used, highlighting the philosophy that objects in your environment must surely play an active role in everyday living.
